Google sold more than one million units of Pixel and Pixel XL devices

Google reportedly sold out more than one million units of their latest smartphones Pixel and Pixel XL. According to an unconfirmed data, Google has sold over 1 million units of their new smartphones. This report is not based on an official information or seller confirmation, but from the Google Play Store.

Google Play Store lets everyone to see how many times an app has been installed on different devices. By using that idea, we have gotten a rough idea about the number of Pixel devices shipped so far. Because, Google has an app in Play Store named as Pixel Launcher, which is only available for the Pixel and Pixel XL devices. No other phones can download it from the Play Store. So we can guess the number of new Pixel devices by looking at the total number of downloads of Pixel Launcher.

At the same time, we cannot extract accurate count from these download numbers. Because Google lists the downloads as ranges (eg: 5000-10000). But from the data observed by Ars Technica suggests 1,000,000-5,000,000 range of downloads for the Pixel Launcher app. That means the total number of Pixel devices has crossed 1 million already. It is more likely in between 1 million and 2 million. But the total number of shipments are really low as this is combined data of two smartphones.
